All Customers Back in Service; Outage Caused by Major Failure on Xcel System

This message was updated at 9:50 p.m.

United Power was affected by a major outage on Xcel Energy's system. They lost a substation that subsequently caused United Power's system to protect itself by interrupting power to the affected substation. Information about the problems that Xcel experienced can be found here. The United Power substation that was affected, Silver Saddle, is located just south and east of Henderson. There were also a few isolated transformers that were damaged by the power surge that started Xcel Energy's problems this evening.

We initially had to inspect the substation to assure that there was no damage, and then began the process of repowering the system. The outage began at approximately 6:30 pm and all customers were back on by 9:07 p.m. While outages are inconvenient, the electrical system contains a number of elements that help to protect the infrastructure of our electric grid. The equipment that tripped off did so to protect the system – including the homes and businesses we serve.

Thanks for everyone's patience, and thanks to those of you that took the time to report your outage via our automated system.

United Power is currently experiencing an outage due to a major equipment failure in one of our substations; it appears that this equipment failed due to an issue with major transmission lines in the area. We estimate that there are currently about 2,000 customers currently affected – primarily in the Holly Crossing and Brighton Farms area.

Crews are on site, and we are currently attempting to re-route power to re-establish service to affected customers. We will continue to update this message as more information is available.

To help us assure that your power is restored as quickly as possible, please enter your information through our automated system – that way we can follow up with you. Be assured that United Power is working hard to restore your power, and provide you with information as it becomes available.
