Martin joins United Power Board - Two incumbents re-elected

United Power’s 71st Annual Meeting resulted in record balloting for the cooperative, with nearly 8,000 ballots returned for the annual election. Approximately 175 people attended the annual business meeting, which was held in Brighton’s new Armory event hall. Board President Dave Dunnell and Director of External Affairs, Troy Whitmore conducted the meeting which included opportunities for the members to answer poll questions about the cooperative and its services.

President Dunnell shared concerns about national and state legislation that may impact rates for all our customers. He assured attendees that our board of directors were involved and actively supporting a dialogue with our legislators to make sure that members’ interests were being heard. He also honored retiring director, Don Cummins from the East District with a plaque from the board. In a surprise presentation, Colorado State Representative Jerry Sonnenberg honored Cummins with a resolution from the House of Representatives honoring his long years of service with United Power, in education and as a member of the Ft. Lupton community.
Secretary/Treasurer Ginny Buczek stated that the cooperative was in good financial condition, with assets of more than 291 million dollars, an increase of more than 17.7 million over 2008. Cost of wholesale power accounted for more than 70% of the cooperatives costs in 2009. The annual kilowatt sales were actually down in 2009 due to a slower economy and milder weather, but higher wholesale rates kept the revenues above the previous year.
Robert Broderick, Chief Executive Officer, addressed the operational directives of the cooperative. He shared how the cooperative continues to keep the communities we serve a priority in this tight economy. Tight internal controls of personnel, equipment, supplies and use of new technologies have all contributed to bottom line savings for the cooperatives.
The volume of ballots lengthened the meeting, with results being reported after 9:30 p.m. Three director seats were up for contention, one each in the West, East and South districts.
Elizabeth “Beth” Martin was declared the winner in the East District. She garnered 2,395 votes. Votes for other candidates were 2,163 for Mark Davis, 1,131 for James Vigessa, and 986 for Cheryl Ferne.
Incumbent director Susan Petrocco was declared the winner in the South District with 4,083 votes. Challenger Shawn Enriques received 2,593 votes.
A recount of ballots in the west district was neccessitated due to the closeness of the race.  Incumbent Lewis Foster was officially declared the winner of the race on Friday morning, April 23rd.  Foster garnered 2,359 votes. Challengers Ursula Morgan received 2,346 votes followed by L. Wade Carlson with 2,020 votes.
