New Metering Process
Your new construction will be ready for meter installation once all the following are complete:
- Construction is finished.
- The electrician-installed meter housing has passed inspection by the city and/or county.
- The inspector has submitted a passed meter release to United Power.
After United Power receives the meter release and gathers the remaining required details – such as service billing information – a meter connect service order is created and assigned to a technician.
United Power aims to complete new service connections within 10 business days. The connection timeline may take longer during periods of high demand or when site conditions require additional work.
NOTICE: Current meter connect lead time is 7-10 days.
- Single phase, above 400A must be CT
- Three Phase, above 200A must be CT
- Disconnect before CT not required unless there is more than one meter
- Require cold sequencing on all commercial services
- United Power will supply CTs and meter housing
- Meter height — 5.5 feet to center
- Meter CT not allowed on XFMR
- Ground to meter base
- Brass tag must be on meter housing to set meter when there are multiple meters
- 5 foot of wire atop the mast to tie into transformer

Typical meter connect process (single family home):
Range of 5-10 business days
- Inspection release received as passed and laterals confirmed as installed.
- Homebuilder request a meter connect.
- Meter connect service order created and issued to Metering department.
- 1 business day
- Service order assigned to technician and connects meter.
- 2-10 business days
Typical multi-verification process (townhomes or apartments with banked meters):
Range of 15–20 business days
- Inspection release received as passed and laterals confirmed as installed.
- Homebuilder request a meter connect.
- Multi Meter Verification form created and request sent to Metering department.
- 1 business day
- 1Ø verification: 2-person crew established from meter tech staff and scheduled.
- 5-10 business days and dependent on current workload, crew availability
- 3Ø verification (townhomes, apartments): 2- or 3-person crew established from special equipment tech staff and trouble shooters and scheduled.
- 10-15 business days and dependent on current workload, crew availability, and trouble shooter schedule or outage response.
- This time frame includes the termination of the conductors in the 3Ø transformer.
- Specific to apartments: This can take up to 2-3 months depending on access, construction inside, and complete units, etc.
- Connect service order are issued to a meter tech upon verification response of complete.
- 1-5 business days
Potential Issues (that increase the range of time to connect a meter):
- No access to site – locked gate, dog in yard
- No access to unit – locked unit (for townhomes or apartments)
- No access to electrical equipment – construction equipment stored around the transformer blocking access
- Yellow Tag corrections required
- Banked Meters - construction plans and/or electrical one line did not include the banked meter information
- Resulting in an increase to the typical time frame because we send out the connect(s) and find them banked. Then the multi-meter verification process starts.
