Union Rural Electric Association's Board Vice President, Alvin Lesser, and Secretary-Treasurer, William Dersham, were traveling to southwestern Colorado with the cooperative's lobbyist to garner support for a territory integrity bill in the state legislature when their plane went down in the mountains.

Remains of the plane were found in March. There were no survivors.
