Union Rural Electric Association's Board Vice President, Alvin Lesser, and Secretary-Treasurer, William Dersham, were traveling to southwestern Colorado with the cooperative's lobbyist to garner support for a territory integrity bill in the state legislature when their plane went down in the mountains.

Remains of the plane were found in March. There were no survivors.

Willie the Wired Hand was created by Andrew McClay for the National Rural Electric Association magazine, RE Magazine. It was later shortened to Willie Wiredhand and selected to represent electric cooperatives in 1951.

Public Service Company of Colorado (PSCo) begins actively competing for Union Rural Electric Association's customer by building duplicate facilities adjacent to many of the cooperative's lines and poles. The co-op petitions the Colorado Public Utilities Commission for certification as a utility.
