Medical Devices United Power prides itself on providing reliable electric service, but there are times due to weather or other factors that power can be interrupted. Nobody likes power outages, and United Power understands that they can be especially worrisome for members with special medical needs. If you use life-sustaining medical equipment that depends on 24/7 electricity for operation, such as oxygen generators, kidney dialysis machines, and respirators, it’s important for you to put together a power outage plan before a disaster. Have a Back-up Plan for Prolonged Power Outages No utility can guarantee uninterrupted service, and following a disaster, your power could be out for several days. If you use electric-dependent medical equipment, we recommend you have a back-up plan for responding to a power outage. The following tips are good considerations when you are making your power outage plan:- Before disaster strikes, register with United Power. A “medical alert flag” will be placed on your account so United Power can contact you in an unplanned outage and before a planned outage.
- If you cannot be without power, plan for how you will obtain power backup. If possible, have a backup battery, generator, or alternate electrical resources. Explore newer solutions, and also consider foot pumps and other simple tools that might suffice when nothing else works.
- For extended outages, you may want to have a plan for evacuation to another location.
- Keep a full charge on devices that will maintain power to your equipment during electric outages.
- Install a special alarm so someone will be awakened if electric service is interrupted during the night.
- Purchase extra batteries for battery-operated medical or assistive technology devices.
- Sign up to receive emergency emails and text messages from your local government alert system.
- Plan for medications that require refrigeration.
- Additional tips for developing a safe and effective backup plan are available through the Americans with Disabilities Act National Network.
- Members can request that United Power ‘flag’ your account with a Medical Alert priority. A ‘Medical Alert flag’ on your account indicates to our employees that someone in your home has special medical needs. A Medical Alert designation does not guarantee against power interruptions, but be assured that in the event of a power outage, our crews are working to restore service as quickly as possible.
- Keep your contact information associated with your electric account up-to-date so United Power can reach you in the event of an outage or emergency.
- Always report your power outages or electric emergencies. Do not assume we know about your outage. Report outages via phone or through our website.
- If you use a generator for back-up power, please notify United Power and use appropriate safety precautions to protect our crews who could be working on the line.

Member Choice Grants Powering Positivity Within our service territory there are several nonprofit organizations that bring value to the community or communities they help support. Member Choice Grants allow our members to nominate a nonprofit organization within the cooperative's service territory to receive grant funds from United Power. These grants will help them continue to work toward accomplishing their mission and serve the local community. In this way, we are able to support the causes our members truly care about. Nominating an organization to receive a Member Choice Grant is as simple as filling out the form below and providing a brief reason why you feel the organization should receive the grant. In 2023, United Power awarded six nonprofit organizations nominated by our members with a $2,000 Member Choice Grant, announced in the United Newsline. Member Choice Grant nominations are now closed. Check back when nominations reopen in 2025.05/04/2021 - 01:26 PM
Message From Our CEO Message From Your President & CEO A Letter to Members Much is being written these days about increasing electric demand in the face of declining central power stations, such as coal plants, and how the electric industry will manage this coming onslaught. People are especially concerned that data centers, driven by advancements in artificial intelligence (AI), will cause major problems for the electric grid. United Power has been blessed with growth for nearly 20 years, and that trend is continuing. One only has to drive around our service territory to see what that growth looks like. Last summer we set a new all-time peak of nearly 650 MW, and this past December we hit nearly 500 MW, making us the largest electric distribution cooperative by load in Colorado and the third largest utility after Xcel and Colorado Springs Utilities. We added nearly 3,300 meters in 2024 and our monthly electric load has increased consistently. More than 7,600 electric vehicles are registered in our service territory. Whether it is the coming of the new BNSF Intermodal Center in Hudson/Lochbuie, expanding existing data centers, or new residential developments, your cooperative is keeping up. Recently, the Colorado Air Quality Control Commission adopted rules that require midstream gas suppliers reduce greenhouse gasses by 20.5% as compared to a 2015 baseline by 2030. This will require electrification of the oil the gas fields — a process United Power began several years ago. We are partnering with our oil and gas members to help them meet this mandate. Our service territory is desirable and we regularly receive inquiries from developers and large loads known as hyperscalers (i.e., data centers). These facilities require large electric loads and heavy demand around the clock. The good news is partnering with them will provide additional backup capabilities, as well as allow us to purchase more power at lower costs for all members. Our Key Accounts Advisors are handling those requests and working closely with the engineering and power supply teams to ensure we can meet their energy demands. Millions of square feet of commercial and industrial space has also been added in just the past few years, especially along our interstate corridors. While some utilities are turning down loads and wringing their hands over the increased demand, United Power believes it is critical to support our members where they are and when they need us. In order to do this, we follow the “LIT” process that involves closely working with potential loads as soon as practical. What does “LIT” involve?- Location. Not every location is suitable to be supplied in a short period of time. Large loads that are moving into our service territory, such as data centers, are able to work with our team to locate areas where we can reasonably provide service within their timeframe.
- Investment. Years ago, the United Power Board of Directors decided that “growth pays,” meaning any capital cost is born by the company or developer. This protects members from costs to add facilities — and yet helps lower other costs as we spread overhead across more members.
- Timing. Advanced planning is crucial to successfully adding infrastructure and we work closely with potential new members to get ahead of critical items such as ordering transformers, preparing the ground, and making sure we have capacity to handle the new load.

New Commercial Construction Electrical Service For New Commercial Construction While filling out the above application, please remember to attached any site plans and CAD files. Please fill out and submit Landbase App for any CAD files. Once submitted, a project manager/coordinator will review your request and create a work/design order. Please allow up to 10 business days for the design and cost letter to be sent out, but larger projects may take up to 20 business days. (Note: A coordinator may request a site visit prior to this letter being sent.) Payment will need to be made up front. Once payment has been received, a Right of Way (ROW) review can begin, if necessary. Once complete, the work order is assigned and scheduled by Operations. Scheduling can usually be made 4-6 weeks out. Upon completion of construction, an electrician-installed meter housing will need to be inspected by the city and/or county. Secondary line is brought to United Power's transformer by an electrician. United Power will provide the meter housing and CTs. After inspection, a meter release is sent to United Power and forwarded to Operations. It may take between 2-10 business days for meters to be set.
